Chinese herbal medicine is one of the oldest and most extensively documented systems of natural medicine in the world. It is also one of the least understood in Western contexts — often reduced to images of dried roots without any sense of the sophisticated clinical reasoning behind the prescriptions.
A System of Formulation
Chinese Herbal Medicine is not simply a catalogue of plants with assigned properties. It is a system of formulation, where individual herbs are combined in precise ways to target a specific pattern of imbalance in an individual patient. The same herb may behave differently depending on what it is paired with, the dose, the preparation method, and the constitution of the person receiving it. Practitioners trained in this system study for years to understand these relationships.
The Heritage Behind the Practice
Dr Timothy (Tim) Dean completed his Master of Applied Science in Chinese Herbal Medicine at RMIT Melbourne, with additional training in Guangzhou, China, and Portland, USA. He is a registered AHPRA acupuncturist and AACMA member whose clinical work with herbal medicine spans over 30 years.
The Dean's Natural Therapeutics product range — available at deansnaturaltherapeutics.com.au — brings that expertise into handcrafted, practitioner-formulated products rooted in three generations of botanical healing. It began in 1928 with Ted Dean's pharmacy in Red Cliffs, Victoria, and continues today in every formula Tim creates from the Sunshine Coast.
Working with a Qualified Practitioner
Quality, sourcing, and clinical rationale matter in herbal medicine.
Working with a registered, qualified practitioner ensures that formulas are appropriate for the individual and do not interact with other treatments or medications.
